I wrote this song in high school when I was fearless in my faith and boundless in my dreams. I wanted to make a difference in this world for Jesus more than anything. But I also had one particular concern. Public speaking terrified me. Being in a public speaking class that year only intensified things. I knew what to say and how to say it, but every time I stood on that stage fear would squeeze me from the inside out.

I wrestled with God a lot that year. Somehow I sensed that my future would require speaking, and I wasn’t sure I wanted that. And if I’m being honest, felt a bit like Moses arguing with a burning bush. A little petty and a little whiny. Even so, God was very patient with me. He directed my heart with the gentlest of touches. After a lot of prayer, I remember sitting down on that red-carpeted stage that scared me so much and singing this song barely above a whisper. It was a surrender moment, a holy moment.

It’s been nine years since that day, and it’s rather amazing to see how far I’ve come. Somehow God brought me from singing about being a candle in the night to writing a public blog that seeks to be a light in the darkness. It wasn’t planned by me, but it was most certainly planned by God. So just in case you ever wonder, no part of your past is ever wasted. And just in case you weren’t sure, God has a beautiful and hopeful future in store for you. But just in case that’s hard to believe, remember you are deeply loved by the Tamer of the darkness and the Creator of the stars. So shine God’s light in everything you do.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” ~ Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV

Shine Your Light

Verse 1

When I don’t know what to say
When I stumble between my words
When I don’t know how to shine Your light
Give me the words to say

Chorus

‘Cause Lord I wanna shine Your light
Here on earth
And shout Your greatness to the sky
I wanna shine Your light
Here on earth
And be a candle in the night
I wanna shine Your light
For You

Verse 2

When I’m blinded by the fog
When I can’t see the truth
When my vision’s blocked by life
Show me what to see

Verse 3

When I can’t hear Your word
When my mind fills with lies
When struggles block out Your voice
Show me what to hear

Chorus

‘Cause Lord I wanna shine Your light
Here on earth
And shout Your greatness to the sky
I wanna shine Your light
Here on earth
And be a candle in the night
I wanna shine Your light
For You

Bridge

When I’m terrified to shine Your light
Calm my fears
When I’m scared to speak Your truth
Give me the words to say
When I’m paralyzed with fright
Remind me Your still here

Chorus

‘Cause Lord I wanna shine Your light
Here on earth
And shout Your greatness to the sky
I wanna shine Your light
Here on earth
And be a candle in the night
I wanna shine Your light
For You

Ending

I wanna shine Your light
I wanna shine Your light
I wanna shine Your light
For You
