It was already late when I pulled out my painting box. I just needed to do something different. My spirit was wound too tight to sleep. What’s more, I had a deep desire to create something with my hands instead of with my mind. Around the same time, I stumbled across a watercolor tutorial on how to paint a beautiful flower. As I began painting, my mind was freed from every burden, and my breathing became smoother with every stroke of the brush.Watercolor Flower

Although I had only planned to paint the large flower, I ended up painting the smaller one in the corner as well. The two seemed to complement each other. One was growing anew, and the other was fully flourishing. The first must come before the second.

When I completed the painting, I found myself relating to the small flower, tired yet brave. However, the larger flower stirred something deeper in my heart, a longing to flourish. As I admired my work, it felt as if God was whispering to my heart, “Keep going, darling. You’re almost there. That flourishing flower is your future. I have great things in store for you. You are going to thrive.”

Sometimes life feels like a painting too. The images can look awkward and blurry at first. Even ugly, if we’re being honest. But between the brushstrokes, the Artist has a greater plan in mind. Up close the shading and layering don’t make sense, but when you step back the purpose becomes clear. There is a season for everything, a season for growing and a season for flourishing.

To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven. ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1 NKJV

Between the Brushstrokes

Another day
Another breath
Another petal on the page

Keep on going
Almost there
Better days are ahead

It may feel a little dark today
But that’s just shading on the page
It will add a little depth one day

Yes, between the brushstrokes
I can trust
You are sovereign over us

I’m far too close now to see
The perfect masterpiece
You’re creating in me

But one day soon
I’ll step back and see
The petals You were painting

Another day
Another prayer
Another drop of water down

Keep on smiling
Hope and dare
Blessings are out there

One day light will illuminate
All the strokes that felt like mistakes
Were really pieces of a greater plan

Yes, between the brushstrokes
I can trust
You are always guiding us

I can’t wait to see
The perfect masterpiece
You have dreamed for me

One day soon the time will come
When I marvel at everything You’ve done
These blessings are the petals You paint

Between the brushstrokes I can clearly see
Your perfect plan for me
Always involved flourishing

All is Grace, Esther Noe
